Used Strength Training

Posted: December 30th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

But what exactly do I mean by intensity?

Finger strength, suppleness and dexterity are essential, desirable attributes for Shaolin Martial Artists’ hands to possess, enhancing their Kung Fu. The following 4 workout drills, created to create your hands and fingers work much more effectively, accurately, effectively and flexibly, can help enhance the following aspects of your Martial Arts performance.

It’s a word that you hear a good deal about if you go to your local gym, as in “boy that was an intense workout!”

But if you apply intensity to strength training, it means just how much effort has to be applied to your strength regime.

For example, let’s say which you are capable of carrying out 60 sit ups in one minute.  In other words that is probably the most you’ve ever been able to do.

If you then do 30 sit ups within a single minute, you’ve worked out with 50% intensity.

So, in case you are working at less than 100% intensity, there seriously is no cause for your body to show the sort of outcomes that you want it to.

Chuan Fa (Fist Way)

You need to be able to physical exercise your muscles at its most maximum rate as a way to see progress.  Should you be doing only what’s achievable or acceptable, you cannot anticipate to obtain the outcome you want.

Palm, hand and finger strikes may well be enhanced similarly and delivered with increased accuracy and confidence.

You want to be in a position to WAKE UP your muscles and demand that they grow stronger.

Qin Na (Seize and Control Techniques)

Great gains may possibly be made through the acquisition of a stronger, surer grip and capacity to exert increased leverage, apply much more power to limb rotation and pressure upon crucial points.

Think about it like the very first time you play tennis.  Chances are, that you are going to have a callus on your hand, because the game of tennis is brand new to you.  But the much more times you play, the less it becomes an issue, and you will probably by no means have a different callus from playing tennis, because your physique has gotten employed to it.

I should also suggest that you read info on Boxing Training Program and also Everlast Punching Bags.

Jujitsu Fitness And Health Benefits For Children

Posted: December 30th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers many fitness advantages to young children that many other more common sports may not. The martial arts school where I train has a Columbia kids martial arts program, and I have seen first hand how jiu-jitsu can positively affect young children, emotionally, mentally, and physically.

Jiu-jitsu allows children to build a strong sense of confidence, which is needed more and more as bullying is being seen more and more. Children learn to set goals and attend class consistently to achieve their martial arts milestones..  Children learn moves, then drill them, and practice them in class with partners. When a child successfully implements moves for the first time it is very rewarding and gives them a sense of accomplishment. Through their own goal achievement, the children involved in the martial arts program develop self-confidence..  Bullies are drawn to children that appear to be weak so as the demeanor of the child becomes stronger, the chances of the child being bullied decreases.

At my Columbia martial arts school, children also develop a strong self-discipline. This derives from the training process and from working with instructors and other students. In order to progress in jiu-jitsu, students must train on a regular basis. It requires dedication and hard work, which translate into self-discipline. Students also gain this attribute from instructors and other students because they gain a sense of respect through regular interaction and sparring.  If you are lucky enough to find a martial arts program that has legitimate athletes and instructors, then the children will also see the discipline that is required for the instructors themselves to succeed in the martial arts and begin to mimic it.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu also provides children with the basic advantage of fitness itself. This martial art requires muscle strength and cardiovascular endurance, but it is achieved differently than in most sports. This grappling style seeks to develop multi-directional strength i.e. functional strength..  You can not get big and bulky like a bodybuilder nor can you be stick-thin like a marathon runner.

Jiu-jitsu provides children with an interesting and creative way to stay physically fit. My school’s Columbia kids martial arts program has provided children with these fitness advantages and changed children for the better. By training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu young children not only gain and grow as a better moral individual, but also are able to stay physically fit.

How And When Did MMA Begin?

Posted: November 30th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

Most people believe martial arts and the beginning of MMA competitions they think most likely of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese fighting styles and martial arts competitions in Japan and China that pitted different styles against each other. Nevertheless combat has been around since the beginning of time. For individuals that believe in creation, the story of Cain killing his brother Able is one of the very first stories and events within the bible. After that, while stories of many ancient battles depict those between legions of sharp spears and swords you are able to be certain those pitched battles needed some serious hand-to-hand combat that needed much much more training and guts to survive than anything anyone experiences within the UFC octagon these days.

When you look at the ancient Greece and Rome. Possibly they were the first recognized civilizations that actually developed unarmed combat training. Still even within the octagon these days you will find the remains of Greco-Roman wrestling, from tournaments held thousands of years ago. You are able to also be certain that surviving on the streets during individuals times was a lot tougher than it’s today, especially without great communications for law enforcement and no street lights, a time when even one Roman Emperor secretly snuck out at night to have fun killing.

Then you’ve the legendary gladiator tournaments that were perhaps the first mixed martial arts tournaments, throwing together warriors from all over the known world in towards the arena for fights towards the death. Fighters exactly where brought to Rome to perform from Africa, Asia and Europe, each with their own unique style. Surely if any of these warriors were resurrected today they would laugh at the octagon and today´s MMA competitions. Rules? There had been none. Submissions, tap outs? Winning back then meant killing your opponent. Besides the hand to hand combat, unarmed fighters had been often thrown up against armed assailants and even tigers and lions. Forget fighting for a championship belt, either you won or had been killed. How´s that for motivation?

Imagine the condition you had to be in to participate in throughout those times. Plus there were no steroids, supplements or weightlifting and as these competitors had been prisoners you are able to bet there wasn´t much of a choice of diet, or especially the luxury of eating 6 to 7 times a day. So, next time you feel like bellyaching in the gym, and you want to blame your poor condition on the fact that eating healthy is just too expensive or feel like giving up within the octagon, remember where MMA training truly comes from and stop feeling sorry for yourself.

Power And Intellect Rule Well In Absorbing The History Of Taekwondo

Posted: November 25th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , | No Comments »

Martial arts have a deep and long tradition. With the practice and history of Taekwondo you see the names meaning come to light in the practice. The word means to strike or break with foot and that is what Taekwondo does, develops the strength in the leg to combat a foe. But it is more than just physical movement as this practice utilizes the mind and spirit as well. The combination makes it very strong.

As with many of the martial arts fields it was developed as part of military training in South Korea. A tool to teach to soldiers it was used for hand to hand combat. The warriors that learned and utilized this type of battling were called Twarag. This martial arts creates speed in the participant. Couple that with incredible strength and adapting this for survival and you have a very powerful weapon at your disposal.

To become a Twarag warrior was not simply to be one who fought. They must also expand and strengthen their spirit and the minds. Studying and learning was vital to this process. Topics like history, philosophy, and ethics determined that the practitioner was stable and balanced in body as well as mind. They would then empower themselves by learning the way of the horse to further their ability to practice their craft and give themselves an advantage.

The martial arts that Koreans practices changed with invasion. The Japanese moved into the country and strongly discouraged the Koreans from practicing this art. Instead the influence of the Japanese was assimilated into Taekwondo. As with many things, combining other strains can create a different and interesting new process.

The focus and power of this martial art comes from kicking. As it is aptly named using the foot is both strong and wise. There is a lot of force that can be sent through the leg and foot and it can be quite effective in hand to hand combat. One of the philosophies of the Korean people was that the hands were necessary and important, too vital to be used in fighting. So the legs were taught to be powerful with speed. Then the aspects of being strong and steady allowed for a participant to be balanced and grounded.

The number of individuals practicing taekwondo is impressive. As such it is one of the most popular types of the martial arts. The International Taekwondo Federation and Kukkiwon are the two popular forms of this practice. The kukkiwon is the style of sparring and is utilized in the summer Olympics. With over three million black belts, or dan as it called, it is practiced in more than one hundred countries.

What began to be used in battle has become a testament to the aspects of training and dedication. The individuals that are involved in this martial art do so to develop more than just their physical strength. The basis of the practice is to combine the mind and spirit together and create a balance of the greatest sort.

The practice of being dedicated and doing more than becoming a powerful physical is what the history of Taekwondo is steeped in. The mind is as important as the body when you are practicing a martial art. The warrior knows this and uses this to their advantage.

Discovering How A Martial Artist Can Increase Their Kicking Power Tenfold

Posted: November 15th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , | No Comments »

Karate, Kung Fu and Tae Kwan Do, the martial arts are all about increasing striking power and speed. A body builder wants to learn how to lift more weights, a runner wants to learn how to run faster, and a fisherman wants to learn how he can save money on beer. A martial artist, on the other hand, will have to ask How a martial artist can increase their kicking power.

The obvious answer is “Keep practicing”, but isn’t that a safe, easy answer for any question about self improvement? Yes, of course you want to keep practicing. But how do you practice the right way and improve specifically in areas where you’re hoping to improve? Well, read on.

Walk More

If you do endurance running, you can get stronger legs, but you probably won’t improve as much as you would walking. With running, you simply can’t go as long as you can when walking. Walking, you can walk for tens of miles before you have to finally call it quits. If you want to improve your leg strength, then stop driving to work (depending on where you work, of course) and start walking a little more each day.

Run In the Morning

When you run, you want to sprint rather than do the whole endurance thing. With sprinting, you’ll learn how to make those legs fast, agile and powerful. This will improve the devastating forcefulness of your kicks so you could nearly knock a Redwood down in a single strike. Speed and power are, after all, almost the same thing in the martial arts.

Crunches

After your legs, your abdominal muscles are the most important part of your body for delivering satisfyingly destructive kicks to an opponent (or, you know, to a piece of wood). Do the crunches, and again, not just in class! Start doing crunches at home every other day, and keep doing more and more. If you can do a hundred in one sitting, shoot for two hundred. It’s the most painful and grueling exercise, but it’s also the most effective.

Stretch

The legs and the abdominal muscles are almost equally important when it comes to kicking power. The stronger your stomach muscles, the stronger your kicks. You want to do as many crunches as you can every other day so as to allow them a forty eight hour rest period between workouts. Do as many as you can stand, though. If you can work your way up to one hundred, shoot for two hundred, then three, then four. The more you do this, the easier it gets, and the harder you’ll have to be on yourself.

Kata

Let’s say that your sensei doesn’t have you practice kata, just strikes. Okay, report them to the martial arts council and find a new sensei, because they obviously don’t know the first thing about the eastern fighting arts. Kata is the alpha and omega of Karate and Kung Fu and all of their derivatives. Without kata, you’re not a martial artist. Through kata, your movements in the fighting arts become second nature so that you could almost win a fight in your sleep. Do your kata, and the rest will flow naturally.

Mixed Martial Arts or MMA is defined as a full contact sport that offers a wide variety of techniques from different styles, both stand-up and on the ground. Kick boxing, Karate, Judo, wrestling and Muay Thai are just a few of the skills utilized. Whole body fighting is acceptable in MMA by combining joint manipulating techniques with throwing and striking.

Muay Thai, for example, was utilized for warfare in the 1800′s. As it modernized, these fights became spectator sports for Kings in various countries. Muay Thai means “Art of Eight Limbs” and makes use of eight contact points. These include knee hits, punches, kicks and elbow strikes performed in a stand-up position. Western boxing holds no comparison with its hands and feet two point fighting.

Ground fighting involves holding the opponent down through grappling moves similar to wrestling. Preventing strikes or getting the dominant position while on the ground is clinched fighting. Very little equipment is needed and usually only requires small gloves, open-fingered or closed, depending on the type of fight. Victory in MMA is determined by knockout, submission or doctor stoppage. Referees have the ability to stop a fight if one of the opponents has sustained serious bodily injury or there have been numerous warnings and fouls causing disqualification.

Mixed Martial Arts became an official sport in the US in 1992 when the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was held. The first no-holds-barred fights were disciplined into a sport including time limits and restrictions to prevent bodily harm. In 2008, the UFC expanded from the United States to Canada. Pay-per-view events have drawn huge audiences and Calgary is comparative to massive cities such as Los Angeles or Chicago. Shows are sold out within minutes by people of all ages and lifestyles.

Individuals travel from all over the world to learn from the best instructors at several schools in Calgary that teach MMA. If this sport interests you, it is cautioned that one should watch a few sessions before committing. Professionals are eager to speak with potential students and enroll them in starter classes to make sure this is an adequate sport for that person. Self defense should not be confused with competitive martial arts. Some of the techniques may overlap, but many of the strategies are not sensible for someone to utilize in an attack type situation.

Wing Chun Training And Chi Sao

Posted: October 28th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

One of the most important things people get wrong when performing chi sao is that they do not get their hands positioned correctly and this bad practice with a partner can cay se your skills to slip and erode what you have been taught.

A classic example of this is performing wing Chun chi sao and having sore shoulders.  This is mainly becomes of one of two things.  Your opponent is hanging on your hands and arms pushing you down or you are driving our hands by the shoulders and by the elbows. Your body will tell you if you are doing it wrong.

Remember everything in wing Chun training revolves around the shoulders. The elbows are not where you should be focussing yor energy.  This is contrary to popular belief.

Usually we are used to our shoulders carrying the burden.

The idea is to have great fluidity.Relax the shoulders , the elbows drive the arms forward.

This is where you should be practicing on sil lim tao…  The wing chun system was smart enough to teach you the basics early on so if you hit a stumbling block you just go back to basics. Moving forward from the elbow towards your opponent.

Have energy in your arms , but be loose you dont want to be too rigid.

The idea of wing chin is to adapt your own style and enhance your strength s, as well as adapt to your opponent. That is why you need to master this, so you can automatically gauge the feel and energy required to defeat your opponent.  The idea is not to meet your opponents energy head on force on force you need to deflect it use it against him and find an opening.

This is very similar to an aikido technique where it uses the opponent’s momentum against them. I am far from an aikido expert the principles are similar.

One of the best ways to practice chi sao is obviously with a fellow student.

However if you are at home and no one to train with the best advice would be to proactive your wing chun training forms to get the positioning right and the movement. The wing Chun dummy is also an excellent training tool for chi sao.You learn how it should feel, you can then move to correct the position to enhance your training.
