Jujitsu Fitness And Health Benefits For Children

Posted: December 30th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers many fitness advantages to young children that many other more common sports may not. The martial arts school where I train has a Columbia kids martial arts program, and I have seen first hand how jiu-jitsu can positively affect young children, emotionally, mentally, and physically.

Jiu-jitsu allows children to build a strong sense of confidence, which is needed more and more as bullying is being seen more and more. Children learn to set goals and attend class consistently to achieve their martial arts milestones..  Children learn moves, then drill them, and practice them in class with partners. When a child successfully implements moves for the first time it is very rewarding and gives them a sense of accomplishment. Through their own goal achievement, the children involved in the martial arts program develop self-confidence..  Bullies are drawn to children that appear to be weak so as the demeanor of the child becomes stronger, the chances of the child being bullied decreases.

At my Columbia martial arts school, children also develop a strong self-discipline. This derives from the training process and from working with instructors and other students. In order to progress in jiu-jitsu, students must train on a regular basis. It requires dedication and hard work, which translate into self-discipline. Students also gain this attribute from instructors and other students because they gain a sense of respect through regular interaction and sparring.  If you are lucky enough to find a martial arts program that has legitimate athletes and instructors, then the children will also see the discipline that is required for the instructors themselves to succeed in the martial arts and begin to mimic it.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu also provides children with the basic advantage of fitness itself. This martial art requires muscle strength and cardiovascular endurance, but it is achieved differently than in most sports. This grappling style seeks to develop multi-directional strength i.e. functional strength..  You can not get big and bulky like a bodybuilder nor can you be stick-thin like a marathon runner.

Jiu-jitsu provides children with an interesting and creative way to stay physically fit. My school’s Columbia kids martial arts program has provided children with these fitness advantages and changed children for the better. By training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu young children not only gain and grow as a better moral individual, but also are able to stay physically fit.

Learning Mixed Martial Arts In Calgary

Posted: November 5th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , | No Comments »

Mixed Martial Arts or MMA is defined as a full contact sport that offers a wide variety of techniques from different styles, both stand-up and on the ground. Kick boxing, Karate, Judo, wrestling and Muay Thai are just a few of the skills utilized. Whole body fighting is acceptable in MMA by combining joint manipulating techniques with throwing and striking.

Muay Thai, for example, was utilized for warfare in the 1800′s. As it modernized, these fights became spectator sports for Kings in various countries. Muay Thai means “Art of Eight Limbs” and makes use of eight contact points. These include knee hits, punches, kicks and elbow strikes performed in a stand-up position. Western boxing holds no comparison with its hands and feet two point fighting.

Ground fighting involves holding the opponent down through grappling moves similar to wrestling. Preventing strikes or getting the dominant position while on the ground is clinched fighting. Very little equipment is needed and usually only requires small gloves, open-fingered or closed, depending on the type of fight. Victory in MMA is determined by knockout, submission or doctor stoppage. Referees have the ability to stop a fight if one of the opponents has sustained serious bodily injury or there have been numerous warnings and fouls causing disqualification.

Mixed Martial Arts became an official sport in the US in 1992 when the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was held. The first no-holds-barred fights were disciplined into a sport including time limits and restrictions to prevent bodily harm. In 2008, the UFC expanded from the United States to Canada. Pay-per-view events have drawn huge audiences and Calgary is comparative to massive cities such as Los Angeles or Chicago. Shows are sold out within minutes by people of all ages and lifestyles.

Individuals travel from all over the world to learn from the best instructors at several schools in Calgary that teach MMA. If this sport interests you, it is cautioned that one should watch a few sessions before committing. Professionals are eager to speak with potential students and enroll them in starter classes to make sure this is an adequate sport for that person. Self defense should not be confused with competitive martial arts. Some of the techniques may overlap, but many of the strategies are not sensible for someone to utilize in an attack type situation.

The History Of Martial Arts

Posted: March 5th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

It is not easy to pinpoint a starting point for martial arts, since numerous forms seem to have been used all over the world for centuries. Most could have a different answer influenced by their opinion of what constitutes a martial art, so coming up with a definitive history can be tricky. However, it is possible to determine where and when different types of martial arts got their start, which can provide an appealing general history of these disciplines.

The fundamental meaning of martial arts is that it is different way of saying the art of waging combat. In its original form, martial arts experts used their skills just to survive, as the world must have been a much different place. In primitive society, people had to kill or be killed, which meant that martial arts were the only way to survive in certain situations. Most martial arts during this period were unstructured and involved doing whatever the individual had to do to survive through the clash, but they have evolved significantly since this time.

Through the years, different types of martial arts have gained in popularity, but it could be said that they all have more similarities than differences. For instance, in every martial art, each movement has a purpose and is directed towards a desired result. In addition, they all aim to teach principles to their followers, which are ideals by which the follower is supposed to live. In the end, all martial arts are also about self-defense, since they give people the ability to protect themselves against others in virtually any situation, which is surely a good skill to have in any society.

As was mentioned previously, its impossible to pinpoint the time and location of the origin of martial arts, but evidence does exist that the Egyptians used hand-to-hand combat dating back to 2500 BC. This would make martial arts nearly 5000-years old, so there’s a long tradition of self-defense. Some believe, however, that the Egyptian kind of combat was too primitive to be regarded as a martial art and point to the more structured version that appeared in China around 1300 BC. In Europe, evidence exists stating that a type of wrestling existed around 750 BC, which would be the first martial art that could be deemed as such. The Greeks and Romans wrestled for sport around 40 BC and India had something similar at around 1 BC. Whichever historical reference you believe, you can’t argue that these ideas have been around for a very long time and definately will continue well in to the future.

For most, martial arts are considered a great gift and this gift has long been handed down from generation to generation in many societies. While martial arts are no longer considered arts of war, they generally do teach mental and physical conditioning that can be used in combat. Many martial artists in the current society would prefer to walk away from a fight than accept one, which is where mental conditioning comes into play. Many of these people are some of the most relaxed and mellow individuals you have ever met, as they know that they possess this gift, but do not want to use it on anyone.

During the last 20-years, individuals have begun training in multiple martial arts to take part in a sport called mixed martial arts. This evolution has taken quite a while to come to fruition, as various martial arts have existed for centuries. For most, martial arts are considered a great gift and this gift has long been handed down from generation to generation in many societies. By combining all of these kinds of martial arts together, martial artists are now more skilled than ever and now have brought together philosophies from many different different cultures in the process.

Moving forward, we’ll likely see a further evolution in martial arts, as more obscure forms will start to enter our society. Because these arts have been about for years and years, it will take a while for people to master them, nonetheless it will happen, much like it is with more mainstream martial arts today. As long as this expansion occurs with peace in mind, it should be a fantastic time for all martial arts practitioners, as they will have the opportunity to learn much more about their craft.

Keeping A Good Mindset While Training Martial Arts

Posted: February 25th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

It is fairly often that new martial arts practitioners get easily discouraged while training. You may be training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, muay thai, or mixed martial arts; all leave room to feel down about how your training is going if it’s not going quite the way you expected or wanted.

To avoid this, you need to simply make reachable short term and long term goals, stay positive, and realize that everyone else is training along with you. If you are training in any martial arts you are going to have good days and bad days, that’s just how it is. What you need to stay focused on and realize is that training in martial arts is a process. Whether you realize it or not, you are getting better everytime you go into your class and train hard.. You need to keep a good mindset and really focus on yourself and what your goals are.

For example, you are training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and you decide you really want to learn how to do the triangle choke well enough to submit people. You drill the move over and over and you are starting to get good at it, but then when you spar with someone in class, you are unable to finish the move because your opponent successfully defends it every time. It would be very easy for you to throw in the towel and conclude that the triangle choke is not for you but remember, that everyone else is training JUST LIKE YOU!. Your opponent also has goals and his may have been to learn how to defend the triangle because he had a high triangle submission rate. So all the time you spent learning how to triangle, he spent learning how to defend the triangle. It is important to have persistence and stay with it, not get angry, frustrated, or discouraged at the fact that your opponent is just as good at defending the triangle as you are at doing it.

Another instance where you are prone to feel discouraged is in Muay Thai. Let’s say you are a beginner in Muay Thai and you go to class and see other students shadow boxing and they are throwing all sorts of punch series and kicking higher than you can even move your leg and they are just doing different series after series. This is a perfect example of where people get discouraged because it looks overwhelming and it’s a lot to look at. In this case you have to realize that the person your watching has most likely been training for at least three months and has developed all these different combinations. Learning how to shadow box like this person will take time. While training in class you learn about three series, so already you have three to practice with.

The coaches at my Columbia Martial Arts school always say that training in martial arts is a process. Training and effort is all that separates you from the people who are “really good”.. You need to keep a positive mindset while training and remember there will be good days and bad days, but stay in the process.

How To Get Started In Martial Arts As A Women With No Experience!

Posted: January 30th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

More and more women are becoming interested in engaging in martial arts as a means for fitness or self defense, but may feel nervous about beginning this sport independently. I recently started training at a Columbia Maryland martial arts school, and I found myself nervous about attending classes without a friend, but I discovered that there are so many options for women in the world of martial arts. Many schools offer mixed classes, as well as Women’s Only classes. For example, at my school, there are both Women’s Only Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai classes.

These classes are especially beneficial for women who are beginning martial arts because these classes provide a comfortable environment and also allow you to create relationships with other women. I was surprised how many new friends I made at my Columbia Martial Arts school after just 3 months of training.. It is a growing sport and more and more women are becoming involved.. My Columbia MD martial arts center has new women joining everyday, so I have been able to transform from the nervous new girl to a welcoming member of my school.

If you are seriously considering getting started with your own training, you need to ask the the school how many women they have enrolled in the program.  It is also important to actually visit and see how many women are actually training in the facility (like gym memberships, martial arts memberships are often not used by the people paying for them).

If you are interested in martial arts training, you should jump right in – after all, there is no time like the present. If you are a woman and share that same nervous feeling I had, start out in the women’s only class, and then slowly transition yourself to the co-ed classes once you feel comfortable. Friendships and a more healthy lifestyle are just two of the benefits I have received through my participation in the martial arts.. Women who are interested in this sport can easily make the changes in their own lives that I have already made in mine so start researching local schools!

So you’ve decided you want to do a martial art, but don’t know which one to do, lets face it, there are loads to choose from, providing you are lucky enough to live in the right area.

Not something I really had when I was growing up unfortunately, however there does seem to have been a growth in clubs in recent years, and also in styles followed. All that was really known about to any degree was Karate and Judo during the time I was growing up, and all I had in my area was karate and it wasn’t for me, but then how do you know if it is or isn’t for you?

A very good question, to my mind you need to determine why you want to do a martial art in the first place. There are many reasons people have – confidence boost, self-defence, fitness, flexibility, competition etc. All perfectly valid reasons, but you will gain different results from different arts.

If you are looking for a confidence boost, then anyone of them is quite capable of giving you confidence.

If you’re looking at Self-Defence, then JuJitsu is probably the best you’re going to come across. (personal opinion and I’m pretty sure that many people will dis-agree, it’s just that that’s what I’ve been doing for many years.) Of late I have been speaking to some people in relation to Keyse and this does seem to have some good options in this area.

If you are hoping to increase your fitness then jujitsu probably isn’t the best option however some form of karate, kick boxing or taekwondo may be more suitable. The same for flexibility, these arts are striking arts with a strong emphasis on kicking, and high kicks, these will give you a good workout and result in increased flexibilty through that repeated high kicking!

If it is competition that interests you then what sort of competition? is it forms that it is based on? If so then you have a multitude to chose from, Karate, Taekwondo, Tai Chi, Kung Fu, it’s a long list. If you are looking at pure grappling, then Sombo, Judo are a good start, if it’s  a bit of everything, mixed martial arts then JuJitsu usually works as a good base then mix in with some Thai Boxing and you’ve the start of a good mix there.

So first look at yourself, what you’re capable of, what you want from it and go and try them. If you’re lucky you might find the right one first time, but if you don’t, don’t let it put you off, let the instructor know what you are trying to achieve and if they’re honest about their art they’ll be upfront about whether or not they can help you.

One thing to bear in mind whatever you decide, a bad instructor can make a good art bad. Don’t let them put you off, unfortunately there are a few out there who are either just trying to make some fast money or dont have the ability to communicate. I’ve seen this happen and they do so at your expense.

Historic Wing Chun Training

Posted: November 1st, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

Today I was at a martial arts shop that had a great chat all things martial arts.  I remember early on in my wing chun training that I would go there and marvel at the weapons, the training tools like the punching pads and the wing chun wooden dummy.   We where talking about Ip Man 2 the movie about the legendary wing chun grandmaster.  Without doubt the most influential man in the last century when it comes to wing chun. When he opened the doors in to his school on Hong Kong to his students he set the path that  would lead his students to eventually take it to the world.Chief amongst them was Bruce Lee.There was also William Cheung and Wong Shong Leung.

We also got talking that previous this moment traditional wing chun or any kung fu training was a practice that was taught under very harsh conditions.  In its most extreme case if you have seen Uma Thurman’s training routine in Kill Bill 2 you will know what I mean.Very little was taught early on and the training was extremely hash. The intention was to ensure the students stamina discipline and dedication.. also reference Danny Laruso in the Karate Kid.

It I very feasible that the only thing you will learn in your first year could be a basic form.  It is really since it has been introduced to the impatient western society that kung fu training styles where designed for quick lessons and quick adaption Now don’t get me wrong the training standards still need to be high and you must apply yourself.

Be grateful that not only we have access to this training- it is no secret that the old school kung fu community where livid when Bruce Lee started teaching this stuff to westerners.   Be grateful that the teaching methods have became advanced through time and more modern so you can pick up  your kung fu style in the most efficient of time.

The 5 Animals Of Kung Fu

Posted: October 2nd, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

Also known as the Kung Fu fist forms, the 5 animals of Kung Fu are known all across the world, and are some of the most poisonous martial arts you can study. There are other specific fist styles in Kung Fu, although none of them are as powerful or as well called the 5 animal styles. As the name implies, these forms were derived from the animals in which they got their names from.

The Dragon Claw

The Dragon Claw is very famous, with the Chinese believing that this style comes directly from the ancient dragon. This style uses an open hand technique that is used for controlling the opponent through grabbing and throwing. Using an open hand technique, stylists may also use the fingers to poke as well. Dragon Claw is very fast, very difficult to defend against – and nearly impossible to predict.

Learning Kungfu

The Leopard Claw

The Leopard Claw style utilizes a half opened fist. The ideal striking method with Leopard is the ridge of the hand, that is formed by folding the fingers towards the palm of the hand, with the palm being the backup or secondary striking method. Leopard Claw is very fast as well, and very lethal if the stylist has enough technique and power behind his strikes.

The Tiger Claw

Tiger Claw uses an open hand movement that is used for ripping and grabbing. Tiger Claw is the greatest of the 5 animal system, and also one of the most efficient styles of Kung Fu as well. It isn’t plagued by simply grabbing and gripping with the hand, but from the digging of the fingernails deep into the skin. Once the fingernails have been embedded in the opponent’s skin, the Tiger Claw stylist can shred the skin right off the bone, tearing the opponent apart. Tiger Claw is very powerful – and one of the most toxic forms globally of martial arts.

The Snake Head

Snake Head resembles the attack of a snake in battle, using an open hand technique which needs the fingers to be held together tight, fully extended. The tips of the finger form a very hard surface, used to attack the softest and most vital areas of the opponent. As a way to be efficient, both hands need to be used together simultaneously.

The Crane Beak

Crane necessitates the fingers being pressed together tightly, creating a striking surface at the foot of the stylist’s fingertips. Although the fingers can be conditioned to a dangerous of strength, most attacks using the Crane technique are focused towards the most vital areas of an opponent.

Martial Arts Training

The 5 animal styles of Kung Fu are very fashionable, and very life threatening. Martial artists that know any of these forms are very life threatening – and more than capable of defending themselves against anything that comes their way.

Mixed Martial Arts Safety: How Far The Rules Have Come

Posted: September 16th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Tai Chi | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

A lot of people worry about Mixed Martial Arts security. Promoters of all MMA events always make sure that there are proper safety rules and safeguards in place so that not everybody gets hurt. Sure there are a lot of different ways an individual could get hurt during an MMA fight but the same might be said for any sport. It is essential to have the right referees for one thing, as it is these that are the individuals who are going to be enforcing those rules and it is up to them to stop the fight whenever necessary.

There is no time at all for delay when you are a referee in an MMA fight. One of the main security rules is that if a fighter is plainly not able to defend himself possibly because he is too hurt or because he has been knocked out, the ref will step in and will stop the fight and this looks after that fighter from getting seriously hurt. Otherwise there may be potential long-term harm to that fighter and he could get seriously hurt. There have been a number of different familiar faces who have stepped in to referee in the octagon.

Bellevue Karate Lessons

John McCarthy is likely the most well known referee in the history of MMA fighting. As the referee for the original UFC fights as well, he is a ref we’ve known to learn and love. The rules in the initial few fights were pretty barbaric, but that was as the sport was really just beginning and people were uncertain of what rules they ought to have. There were people who were much more horrified at the MMA fights of long ago than those of now.

Kent Karate

The early UFC fights were a little different, as there were much fewer rules and a large number of individuals who saw the fights were horrified. There are a lot more rules enforced, including that you are unable to grab onto your opponent or pull on their hair or clothing. The sport is less hazardous today and particularly so compared to certain other sports, like boxing. With boxing the basic purpose is to hit the other person in the mind until they’re unconscious.

Bellevue Martial Arts

The goal here’s to be more strategic, to learn what your opponent is going to do and then take them down on it. Because players are able to make use of a variety of fighting styles it is more to do with technique than actually hurting the opponent. The MMA fights these days are much safer and as a result of this we do not have to feel so bad watching them. MMA fighting is certainly still a rough sport but the Mixed Martial Arts security has improved substantially over time.
