Choosing A Martial Art

So you’ve decided you want to do a martial art, but don’t know which one to do, lets face it, there are loads to choose from, providing you are lucky enough to live in the right area.

Not something I really had when I was growing up unfortunately, however there does seem to have been a growth in clubs in recent years, and also in styles followed. All that was really known about to any degree was Karate and Judo during the time I was growing up, and all I had in my area was karate and it wasn’t for me, but then how do you know if it is or isn’t for you?

A very good question, to my mind you need to determine why you want to do a martial art in the first place. There are many reasons people have – confidence boost, self-defence, fitness, flexibility, competition etc. All perfectly valid reasons, but you will gain different results from different arts.

If you are looking for a confidence boost, then anyone of them is quite capable of giving you confidence.

If you’re looking at Self-Defence, then JuJitsu is probably the best you’re going to come across. (personal opinion and I’m pretty sure that many people will dis-agree, it’s just that that’s what I’ve been doing for many years.) Of late I have been speaking to some people in relation to Keyse and this does seem to have some good options in this area.

If you are hoping to increase your fitness then jujitsu probably isn’t the best option however some form of karate, kick boxing or taekwondo may be more suitable. The same for flexibility, these arts are striking arts with a strong emphasis on kicking, and high kicks, these will give you a good workout and result in increased flexibilty through that repeated high kicking!

If it is competition that interests you then what sort of competition? is it forms that it is based on? If so then you have a multitude to chose from, Karate, Taekwondo, Tai Chi, Kung Fu, it’s a long list. If you are looking at pure grappling, then Sombo, Judo are a good start, if it’s  a bit of everything, mixed martial arts then JuJitsu usually works as a good base then mix in with some Thai Boxing and you’ve the start of a good mix there.

So first look at yourself, what you’re capable of, what you want from it and go and try them. If you’re lucky you might find the right one first time, but if you don’t, don’t let it put you off, let the instructor know what you are trying to achieve and if they’re honest about their art they’ll be upfront about whether or not they can help you.

One thing to bear in mind whatever you decide, a bad instructor can make a good art bad. Don’t let them put you off, unfortunately there are a few out there who are either just trying to make some fast money or dont have the ability to communicate. I’ve seen this happen and they do so at your expense.

Historic Wing Chun Training

Today I was at a martial arts shop that had a great chat all things martial arts.  I remember early on in my wing chun training that I would go there and marvel at the weapons, the training tools like the punching pads and the wing chun wooden dummy.   We where talking about Ip Man 2 the movie about the legendary wing chun grandmaster.  Without doubt the most influential man in the last century when it comes to wing chun. When he opened the doors in to his school on Hong Kong to his students he set the path that  would lead his students to eventually take it to the world.Chief amongst them was Bruce Lee.There was also William Cheung and Wong Shong Leung.

 

We also got talking that previous this moment traditional wing chun or any kung fu training was a practice that was taught under very harsh conditions.  In its most extreme case if you have seen Uma Thurman’s training routine in Kill Bill 2 you will know what I mean.Very little was taught early on and the training was extremely hash. The intention was to ensure the students stamina discipline and dedication.. also reference Danny Laruso in the Karate Kid.

 

It I very feasible that the only thing you will learn in your first year could be a basic form.  It is really since it has been introduced to the impatient western society that kung fu training styles where designed for quick lessons and quick adaption Now don’t get me wrong the training standards still need to be high and you must apply yourself.

 

Be grateful that not only we have access to this training- it is no secret that the old school kung fu community where livid when Bruce Lee started teaching this stuff to westerners.   Be grateful that the teaching methods have became advanced through time and more modern so you can pick up  your kung fu style in the most efficient of time.

The 5 Animals Of Kung Fu

Also known as the Kung Fu fist forms, the 5 animals of Kung Fu are known all across the world, and are some of the most poisonous martial arts you can study. The Dragon Claw

Wing Chun Training-A Taoist View Of The Centre Line Theory

Wing chun is centred on the taoist principle of taking the middle road. Basically you should no go to extremes, success is based on balance.   If you are in the middle of the road you can see both the left and right paths, but if you venture too far to one side you may loose sight of the other~Being in the centre of the path allows you to see both sides of the road if you go too far to the one side you lose siht of the other}~Travelling along the middle ground you see both left and right sides, if you veer too far to one side you may loose sight of the other~Being in the centre of the path allows you to see both sides of the road if you go too far to the one side you lose siht of the other} .  This can also be interpreted as the concepts of hard and soft principles- or Yin and yang  of your kung fu training Yin ( the feminine/soft side) focusses on diverting the flow of energy  where yang (the masculine/hard side ) seeks to resist any opposing energy flow and be more aggressive.Yang is seen as the aggressive striking moves.

 

Subsequent generations of wing chun training practitioners have refined the system further , but always keeping to the  simple almost scientific principles  of the art: the centre line theory.  (protecting and striking at most major pressure points ) -economy of motion (keeping every movement as  simple as possible ) and the self explanatory principle of combined or simultaneous defence and attack.

 

The centre line theory is viewed as being the most definitive part of the wing chun training system, since there are many attacking strikes that seek to obscure the vision of an aggressor .  The centre line is also defensive, since your own vulnerable points are protected by centre attacks.Wing Chun is an art of self defence, the wing chun practitioner is never seen as an aggressor.The situation may require the need for aggressive attacks if faced with multiple assailants.  In this  situation wing chun practitioners find the use of finger strikes, elbows and knee kicks to be of great value.Even a great wing chun master can be overwhelmed by a multiple attack, you should always look to strike and make your escape as he main objective..

The Many Styles Of Kung Fu

White Crane style

The spirit of the White Crane has led to what many martial artists consider to be the most graceful system of Kung Fu. Although the methods within the White Crane style can take years to the right way master, they simple and to the point. White Crane stylists are masters of self defense, although they are taught to avoid confrontations. Wing Chun

rom a Chinese point of view, Wing Chun is the essence that the opponent will attack, absorb, and then neutralize the attack. Then, the opponent or attacker will back down, pursue, then counter – disengage his restriction from arms, and then retaliate with a life threatening and penetrating force.

This philosophy will take years to fully understand, and years of practice to master. Technically speaking, Wing Chun uses a steady and never ending forward flow of energy that’s founded on the principle that a straight line is the shortest distance between two points.

Offensively, Wing Chun is all about a compounding of intercepting and straight lines with deflecting arcs. In general, it is a hostile close quarter style that pushes offensive attacks and takes the fight right to the attacker. This means that – Wing Chun doesn’t care nor does it put a great amount of time towards the more conventional block and counter schedules.

Hung Gar

ung Gar is approximately an adaptation of the Tiger system of Shaolin that emphasizes close quarter systems. Hung Gar isn’t much on distance fighting, although it is very effective in close quarter situations, like alleys and in small rooms. A Walkthrough of the WIng Chun Training System

But you don’t need to have the talent, strength or skill of Bruce Lee to learn Wing Chun.  In fact as legend has it, Wing Chun was taught to a humble village girl in China from a Nun of the Shaolin Temple. Wing Chun was created for Women.

Formulated base on a series of manipulating body mechanics Wing Chun does require brute strength.  These are taught at the very beginning of your wing chun training.

The most basic yet most important form for beginners is the shil lim tao form.  This is where the foundation concepts and ideas of the wing chum system are learned. The basic stance and defensive guards of Wing Chun are taught here.

Next form is Chum Kill also known as bridging the gap- where advanced footwork is introduced and attacking moves and strategies.  Bridging the gap refers to the gap between you and your opponent and how to make up that ground in an attacking manner to nullify and win over your opponent. Be mindful of your distance from your opponent as the real threat is when they are close. Remember ‘stick and stones will break bones but words never harm.

You must ignore name calling in an altercation its a ruse to provoke you-your real focus should be on the physical threat. The space between you and your opponent is neutral ground. Bridging the gap between you and your opponent require a specific strategy as you are engaging towards a physical threat. You learn how to make up this ground with Cum Kill.

Bill Jee is the most advanced form in the Wing Chun training system where you train to strike with your fingers.  The basic idea is that fighting with this technique amongst other thinks increases your range to strike your opponent and targets specific areas. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing so his advanced technique is offered for informational purposes only.

The one thing that distinguishes Wing Chun from other styles is Chi Sao. This is a sparring technique where you apply the hand forms learned by the previous wing chun training forms and apply them to a sparring/ fighting situation.  The sticky hands technique teaches how to guard/attack by the feel of your opponents arms.

Wing Chun fighters should have both wrists interlocked with each other in a specific position to break through the others defences. You Block your opponents attacks by sticking to their wrist, controlling their attacks and setting up your own.

It is a lot more involved than this, however it is a critical part of your wing chun training.

Finally you have the Wing Chun Dummy to contend with.  This simple wooden dummy provides infinite amount of concepts and strategies to practice from-and can take a beating only thing I would warn is to work on your conditioning. The wing chun wooden dummy or Muk yan Jong will last a lot longer than you during a training session ..but not sure if your arms can take the Wing chun wooden dummy and its solid base and solid arms  However it is an invaluable tool and an essential component of any students wing chun training.

This holds true in all aspects of our lives.More to the point i have found that it is the biggest bullies that seek to impose their physicality that are the most fearful and insecure.They are usually bullies and seek to be the strongest.

However I side effect I found whilst doing my wing chun training was that the more I learned the more comfortable I became with myself.Out with friends i was calm and relaxed.  Whenever there was someone acting inappropriately –usually drunk and calling names before I would get upset and felt a great insult and had to prove my self by a physical demonstration of strength so I didn’t lose face.

 

However as I developed my skill and came confident in my abilities I came to realise that it I was the only one I had to prove anything to.drunken stranger does not determine how i behave, i have the confidence to ignore all negativity that comes my way.  To be totally superficial, did I need to prove to the world that I was able to beat up a drunk who didn’t know better.I had the confidence in myself that i could defend myself and other around me.. I didn’t need to start an unnecessary altercation to prove anything. I had the inner confidence and did not have the need to prove my self to anyone.  That is the gift wing chun training gave me.
