Caffeine
Caffeine is a drug that is used all over the world to give us a boost and wake us up, most commonly in the form of coffee or tea, but it is also in many medicines and soft drinks. It is classed as a stimulant so can help us to get going, to feel more alert and generally give us a lift. However, the down side is that too much caffeine is not good for health and can cause shaking, rapid heartbeat and increased feelings of nervousness and anxiety. Just like many other drugs, there are also nasty withdrawal symptoms when coming off caffeine so it should be taken in moderation.
Chocolate
Chocolate contains chemicals that help to improve mood including tryptophan, phenylethylamine and anandamide although the amounts of these chemicals in chocolate are believed to be too small to make any difference. The most likely explanation put forward by researchers for the boost given to us by chocolate is that the chemicals in chocolate help to sustain the levels of mood enhancers chemicals in the brain for longer periods of time. However, the down side to eating chocolate is that overindulgence can lead to weight gain and therefore an increased risk of heart disease and other health problems. Again, should be taken in moderation.

When we decided to camp out, and let the kids go to disney, I did not realize how many bugs are in Florida, but with all the flooding the mosquito population has been enormous I heard from the camp site manager.
So, we ran around Orlando, and then headed to the Tai Chi healing seminar that was going into the evening. Some great topics were covered along with Tai Chi ball, and Tai Chi Ruler. Not as much interest as the Tai Chi movement that everyone seemed more interested In. Cornered the instructor later before I left and we walk around the pool at the camping resort, and discussed tai chi ball training techniques that were helpful
By the time I got back the cabin my arms, legs, and face had numerous itchy and welted mosquito bites, and being at the hotel and late I made due. Here are a few ideas for the pesky insects if you should be out doors practicing your tai chi ball, or camping
How To Treat Mosquito Bite
They are an annoying fact of life, mosquitoes. You’re enjoying one of your warm caribbean holidays getting lots of sun and suddenly (often overnight) you find yourself covered in loads of itchy bites. More often that not it is us that is encroaching on their ground so its to be expected really that they take advantage. However, that’s not to say we have to live in discomfort. Simply use this little tricks and you won’t even know you have the bites any more.
1.) Use warm soapy water to clean the bite and around the surrounding area. In order to reduce the amount of swelling that will take place and decrease the chances of picking up an infection the bite, clean it as soon as you possible can. You should continue to keep all bites clean until they have gone down, especcially if your somewhere that maybe has lower standards of cleanliness like some parts of Thailand.
2.) Put some ice on a thin towel, wrap it up and place directly onto the bite.This will cool the surrounding area and reduce blood flow to the bite site. The result being less discomfort and greatly reduced levels of swelling
3.) For a natural bite remedy, try salt and baking soda. Mix the baking soda with water until it forms a paste, and then add a spoonful of salt. The baking soda will bring down swelling and the salt will decrease itching. Something that is also natural and works in pretty much the same way is aloe vera
4.) You can always use specific medications on the bite as well. A tropical anaesthetic that contains pramxomin or calamine lotion will help with irritation and pain. You should really try any medication on one bite first to see if it has any adverse effects. If not then you can continue to use on any other bites.
5.) Lastly you can take oral medication to help as well.An anti-histamine will work to reduce the bodies negative response to the bite and will generally make you feel bett. Anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen do pretty much the same job but better reduce swelling.

The study is an important book mark on arthritis study as the participants who took part in the study had knee osteoarthritis for approximately ten years. What this means is that chronic arthritis or advanced arthritis with cartilage that has been worn down, can find relief, and repair some damage.
This study was controlled by Dr. Chenchen Wang of Tufts Medical Center in Boston reported at a meeting of the Yank School of Rheumatology in San Francisco, who stated "Tai chi mind-body exercise seems to supply a vital approach for self-care and self-management for knee (osteoarthritis)," The study provided the most recent proof that tai chi in all its many forms (tai chi ball, tai chi ruler) may offer advantages for many individuals with arthritis. Tai Chi Chuan is a traditional Chinese "internal" or soft martial art regularly practiced for its health-giving and religious qualities.
Each morning, an approximate 30,000,000 folks all over the world begin their day with the routines ( known as forms ) that are at the center of tai chi.
In contrast to the Western idea of "no discomfort, no gain" an hour of tai chi essentially burns more calories than surfing and virtually up to downhill skiing.[1] The art is further said to enhance the flow of Chi ( Qi ), the normal Chinese idea of a physically unsubstantial energy or life force. Though its low-impact workout is particularly useful to seniors, tai chi is for everybody and is deceptively easy in appearance.
In Tai Chi Chuan practice, hands are held as "Yin-Yang Hands." The palm represents Yin, the back of a hands represents Yang. "Yin-Yang Hands" is referring to a 2 hands’ relation that is one hand is Yin ( the palm ), the other hand must be Yang ( the back ). By our nature, the movements of Yin-Yang Hands describe a "ball" where the palms are moved along the skin of it. Usually , we control the Tai Chi ball by moving the shoulders, that may give us a Tai Chi ball about the dimensions of our chests. As 5 Directions expand the tai Chi ball by moving the heels to where 8 Jings are most productive, with 8 Jings and 5 Directions pushing the body to the maximum performance, the movement of Yin-Yang Hands describes the slippery "Tai Chi Ball.

For Easterners, particularly Chinese, this MAY not be an issue. Tai Chi Chuan is deeply rooted as part of the Chinese culture. It is known to almost everyone what Tai Chi Chuan is all about. Note there: I said “…MAY not be an issue”, meaning that there are exceptions, particularly to Chinese who are not born and grown up in China.
For Westerners, surprisingly – I found many sites dedicated to Tai Chi Chuan, and some of this information is from Westerners. However, deep in my instinct, there are still many who want to know more about learning Tai Chi Chuan.
Moreover, many literatures and scriptures about Tai Chi Chuan are still mainly written in Chinese, and much translation is needed to make it more accessible to the West. I’m doing such translation work.
Yes, I’m a Chinese, trained in both Chinese and English languages since young. And, I would really love to share my passion in Tai Chi Chuan with whoever interested about the subject.
In my 23 years of learning and research in Tai Chi Chuan, martial arts, meditation and healing, I found some questions are very much of interest for a keen learner, or even beginner.
Examples of these are, “Can a senior person learn Tai Chi Chuan?”, “Is it easy to learn and master?”, “What do I need?”, “Should I know about Daoism to learn Tai Chi Chuan?” and so on.
For a start, everyone and anyone can learn this art though it is once a closely kept secret among the family or clan, or later among Chinese. Age has no barrier. In fact, senior people found it very beneficial to their physical health and mental well-being, by practicing regularly.
The original forms of Tai Chi Chuan, irregardless of which styles, require a lot of effort, time, and dedication to learn and master. Simplifying is a necessity. In fact, I started learning the simplified version of Yang style 24 forms. This requires a lot of effort and time from my side to achieve reasonable level of mastery.
Tai Chi Chuan is the outward projection of certain principles found in the Chinese culture. Though the understanding of its principles is desirable, it is not necessary…yet, for a beginner. Principles I referred to here is not the fundamental principles of Tai Chi Chuan itself. It is more of philosophical principles – close to I-Ching, and some of Daoism.
The fundamental principle of Tai Chi Chuan is a must for a beginner, so that he or she will know the correct way to execute the movements.
Other things enquirer of Tai Chi Chuan would like to know is – “What’s in for me?”
Particularly skeptics who see this as slow-moving, apparently energy-less, and senior-people related martial arts.
“Can this help me???”
If I say – “Yes, it can help!”. You may also doubt my words. I don’t mind that. But, how about keeping an open mind and you try it out for yourself. You will see the effects over time. And if you don’t, then, you are not doing it correctly!

Tai Chi Chuan may ‘appear’ to be slow – but this is only for practicing. It actual combat application – you should be able to move extremely fast in order for it to be of use.
The apparent energy-less motion is in fact energy in disguise. The energy gathered and harnessed in Tai Chi is not brute force – but vital energy, Qi that is even more potent than physical strength and energy.
Senior-related?
Incidentally – yes, it seems more senior people practice Tai Chi Chuan than younger people, for health reasons. But international champion male and female Tai Chi exponents in China were been trained since childhood. And there are a lot of young adults learning and practicing this art. Hmm… should I still say senior-related???
It does bring a lot of benefits to anyone who practices it religiously, and in particular – correctly. And the best thing is – the benefits can be limitless, and may cover every aspects of your life! Try it for yourself!

Emotional Health Through Qigong and Tai Chi

Our emotional health is essential if we are to live an enjoyable and successful life and interact with others in a fulfilling way. Lack of emotional control often keeps us from initiating meaningful contact with other people and expressing ourselves in social situations.
There are many approaches and techniques for improving self confidence. The ones mostly relied upon range from psychological techniques, such as those used by psychotherapists to help their clients overcome emotional problems, to physical stress-relief maneuvers, such as getting a massage or working out regularly. However, there is another way that pertains to a totally different understanding of the emotions.
Thousands of years ago, in ancient China, a system of techniques called Qigong has emerged, which relied upon the philosophical principles of Yin and Yang, the 5 elements and the complex relations between human existence and nature, relations that underline and influence every aspect of our health and well-being. Tai Chi, with its slow graceful movements, is actually just Qigong in motion. What few people know, however, is that the improving emotional health is one of the areas Qigong and Tai Chi excel compared to other practices.
What Is Qigong?
Qigong is a system of techniques designed to promote health and enable the cultivation of Chi, the essential life force sustaining our bodies and informing and animating all known phenomena. Qigong techniques include breathing exercises, slow movements, static standing postures, meditation and visualizations. Through these techniques, people of all ages are able to correct their posture and improve their mobility, regain their strength and vigor and overcome most diseases.
But one of the strongest points of Qigong practice is it’s ability to help us achieve emotional balance in a very effective and unique way. Tai Chi then enables us to take command of our body and encourage the energy accumulated through Qigong to circulate along the natural pathways.
How Does Qigong Relate to Emotional Health?
Chinese medicine has established a complex system of relations between emotions and our vital organs. English expressions like "being livid with anger", "having a broken heart" or "a heart filled with joy" make perfect sense in this context, because the liver is associated with anger and the heart is associated with emotional suffering, and when energetically balanced, with joy and love. Refined over thousands of years, this knowledge is of course far more complex than, but you do not need to understand all the complexity in order to practice those simple techniques.
In Qigong, each emotional imbalance is seen as a sign of an energetic imbalance. This is not necessarily good or bad but it’s a state of weakness, just as any disease. Harboring negative emotions for too long actually lead to physiological diseases in most cases.
Learning how to use abdominal, deep breathing is one of the most valuable tools at your disposal for calming your mind and remaining in control. Straightening your spinal column and unblocking its essential energy centers is another way to insure increased emotional stability and a clear mind as well. Then there are the meditation techniques which allow us to clear our mind, and the static postures designed to release tension and encourage the flow of Chi along the meridians the way it’s naturally supposed to flow.
What Is Qigong’s Approach So Powerful?
Think of psychological techniques of improving emotional health as "learning how to drive better". No matter how poorly maintained you car is, if you are a good driver, you are able to make the best out of it and avoid getting into accidents too. Think of taking care of your body, getting massages, running and getting enough sleep as "performing basic maintenance for your car".
But think about Qigong and Tai Chi as putting quality gasoline in your fuel tank and making sure the transmission and the steering remain intact. Because no matter how good a driver you are, there is nothing you can do if the transmission jams.
Qigong and Tai Chi are a slow but easy and steady progress towards attaining great emotional health and balance so that even in difficult or challenging circumstances, you maintain your inner composure and your ability to enjoy yourself.

The Ruler is a type of qigong used to nourish and fortify the qi. The Bang ( Stick ) is heavy while the Ruler is light.
"Qi comes quickly" with the Ruler practice, implying that the practitioner feels the qi simply when holding the Ruler in both palms.
Both ends of the Ruler are round in shape and fit nicely in the centre of the palms.
The Ruler coaching is flexible, in the way that you can practise the movements individually or do them as a set. This practice gives you a good grounding which lets you reach higher levels in qigong. It’s a synthesis of all the ingredients which are required for development at higher levels. And, naturally, with the smooth circulation of blood and qi, good health is in the palms of your hands.
The art contains 8 sets of exercises done in repetition with deep, slow respiring and the ruler held between the palms. Each exercise coordinates breath, psychological and visible concentration with a basic t’ai chi physical pattern.
Hold the ruler so that it is in a vertical position whilst your arms are like welcoming a balloon.
Push the ruler in so that it is near your chest and out again. At the same time your wrists must revolve as if you are wringing the ruler. Hold the ruler horizontally out front of your chest with your palms facing your chest. Next, using your waist, turn left but using your right hand to bump your right end of ruler down ( at about that point, the right end of the ruler moves toward your body ) whilst your left hand will attempt to resist the movement. After that, turn back to face the front to the beginning position.

Your thumb does the pushing on one ball, and you fingers will push and rotate the other ball. This technique is not as graceful, and the rotation does not have a smooth flow, however, it is the beginner’s technique and we all start at the beginning, as our energy grows.
As you grow more skilled you will find that the balls glide and roll from point to point with a fluid motion.
Your hand will be stronger, and you mind sharper, you will start to notice circular patterns develop, as you hand stretches out giving more room for the ball to glide. You will no longer be just holding the balls in your hand, but using your fingers to push and redirect the motion of the balls. The palm of your hand should now tilt downward to make use of gravity, and the natural energy that flows from heart to hand. The hand motion, will involve your thumb pushing one ball across the palm of your hand, and your pinky finger will catch the ball and then extends to let the ball roll across the fingers, not the palm of your hand. While it is rolling, your fingers curve forward and the ball rolls in a U shape across the fingers back to your thumb.
